Identifying With Jesus
Treasured Vignettes

“Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan {coming} to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent Him, saying, ‘I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?’ But Jesus answering said to him, ‘Permit {it} at this time, for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’” Matthew 3: 13-15

In this passage Jesus the Christ identifies Himself with the message of righteousness, and, also, “numbers Himself among transgressors,” i.e., identifying Himself with mankind’s need of repentance for the remission of sins, though He was sinless. If we’ve been Christians for very long, sometimes we forget “from whence we’ve come.” We can take on a pride about our salvation, an attitude of exclusion towards those who are not Christians or whom we judge to be “transgressors.” If we are to glorify Christ on this earth, we cannot sanction this attitude. We must repent of it and embrace the same attitude that was in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:1-8). Selah.
