Treasured Vignettes
“And behold a Canaanite came out from that region, and began to cry out, saying, ‘Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David, my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed.’” Matthew 15:22ff
The Lord tests our faith in various ways. He tested the Canaanite woman’s faith by stating a prejudicial statement of the time. It was an accepted practice of the Jews to shun such people as Canaanites and other “Gentiles.” The woman could have turned away at the rebuke but she did not. She believed in spite of traditional social restrictions and found that God truly seeks and rewards those of faith, not just a particular type of person. “Great faith” is faith that is held onto when the tide of worldly unbelief and evil comes against you. God’s mercy is given to “whosoever believes.” Selah.
