Treasured Vignettes
“But flee these things (the love of money, the desire to be rich and the evil that accompanies the longings for such things), you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.” 1 Timothy 6:11(interjection based on verses 9 and 10)
The ratio between the numbers of rich and not so rich is great. There are few “rich,” many sufficiently well-off and many more, in the world, who are financially poor. Even the poorest in America are considered “well-off” by the millions who live in poverty elsewhere. But, that’s not the point Paul is trying to make here with Timothy. The man/woman of God is to be characterized by his/her focused pursuit of the “riches” of God. Being content with God’s supply for our earthly necessities, we are to be “rich in good works, generous, and ready to share.” Our “savings accounts” are to be full of integrity, faith, holiness, love, godliness, long-suffering and humility. These compose our “foundation for the future” which cannot be stolen, lost or destroyed.
