Treasured Vignettes
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love . . .” Galatians 5:22
It was God’s steadfast covenant love that initiated creation. Love is extremely creative. Always seeking ways to express itself, it has a language all its own. Love is variegated. It expresses itself physically, musically, cordially, deeply in friendship, in the marital union and in religious worship. Love is easily spoken of but hard to understand. The degree to which we love is expressed by the degree we trust our self to another and by the way we treat another.
The highest standard of love, Divine love, is self-sacrificing, is purposeful for good, is unconditionally given and forms a bond, or covenant, that is forever. This love is not whimsical or fickle. It is steadfast and does not waver or turn cold when it suffers trials or grief, or, even, betrayal. It remains kind even when insulted. True love doesn’t want what others have; it wants to give so another may have. True love is humble, easily entreated, and quick to give another a place. True love enjoys honesty, welcomes truth and does not take offense when corrected or criticized. True love is given without thought of return yet hopes for a free exchange. It bears with our shortcomings, hopes for our well-being and endures our fumbling and failures in order to help us succeed. That Divine Love is given to all through Jesus Christ. It is imparted to those who believe. It labors to transform us, bless us and keep us for the joy that awaits us. And, Love makes us a freshwater spring so that others may taste its goodness. Love is the first fruit of the consecrated soul. Think about it.
