What Is Accomplished By Forgiveness?

"Forgiveness is accomplished when the one sinned against absorbs the blow in order to set someone else (usually the offender) free. The only way to do this is to forgive as freely as the Lord has forgiven you. Forgiveness is substitutional. No one really forgives unless he bears the pain himself, for the sake of Christ, for his own peace, and for the setting free of the one who sinned against him. Forgiveness gives acceptance and recognition when a person doesn't deserve it. Forgiveness gives up the right to judge and gives it over to the Lord, the Righteous Judge. It trusts Him to do a good job of bringing justice."
