"Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe." Rom 3:20-22
"I can't be good enough!" Nobody can. No one can "get it right" by doing what the law of God commands. "For the more we know of God's laws, the clearer it becomes that we aren't obeying them; His laws serve only to make us see that we are sinners" (Romans 3:20 LB). And, may I add, sinners in need of God's grace. God has given us this grace in fullness in His son, Jesus Christ (see John 1:14). This is the way God chose to favor us with acquittal of our sins: believe in and trust Jesus Christ to take our sins away. God gave His law that we might clearly see our inability to have life apart from Him. Many people, including many Jews, have boasted that by their works they can be good enough to save themselves. They have made their own rules, trying to negate, complicate or water down God's laws, only to find themselves tormented, frustrated and defeated. When we strive to make ourselves "good enough" in our own strength we will only find ourselves deceived, oppressed and condemned. How then can we be saved? "So it is that we are saved by faith in Christ and not by the good things we do" (Romans 3:28). Think about it.
