"Well, then, if we are saved by faith, does this mean we no longer need to obey God's laws?" (Romans 3:31, LB)
God through Jesus Christ didn't just save you and me from something but for a purpose. Mankind has always had a purpose for existence, to be God's people. He created us in His image and gave us a place on earth. He gave us the earth and the living things on earth to manage and make fruitful to His glory. He created all law, natural and spiritual, that man would be blessed and enjoy His goodness and love. He knew that if we trusted Him all would go well with us. If we trusted His goodness and faithfulness, we would not chafe against the boundaries He set for us.
But we did not trust Him and sin was woven into the fabric of our lives. Our hardest battle is to trust God and His plan for our lives. We broke faith with God and we think He is like us--faithless and not to be trusted. BUT HE IS NOT LIKE US IN THAT HE IS NOT A LIAR. A liar is not just someone who tells a fib. No, a liar blames God for his/her own transgressions and injustices and sins. The truth is not found in the liar, for he/she must deny truth in order to justify his/her own sin. Satan did it and was cast out of heaven. Our forefathers, Adam and Eve, distrusted, accused and disobeyed God and were sent out of the place God had prepared for them. On and on, down through history, we see the corruption of mistrust and disobedience fouling every person's life.
No, we cannot stop obeying God's laws because God saved us from our sins! In fact, our salvation is based on trust in God and His way of saving us through Jesus Christ. It is obedience to God that activates our faith and invigorates our trust in Him. Think about it.
