The Holy Spirit of God is an interesting subject that has been used and abused. Many think of the Holy Spirit as a totally separate entity from God. Some even attribute evil to Him. Others think He is nothing more than a messenger or servant of God, who gives gifts and convicts of sin. Still others try and use Him for sordid gain, fame or political leverage.

We are first introduced to the Spirit of God in Genesis chapter 1, "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters" (KJV). Spirit is described in Webster's as "the essence of God serving as an invisible and life-giving or inspiring power in motion." The essence of God is the constitution of God; His nature, make-up; the totality of His properties, attributes and qualities. In other words, God as He is--I AM. Genesis begins to teach us about a living, active God. When He moves and breathes, creation happens. Settling this fact is basic to our understanding of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God in motion. Jesus Christ is God saving us; God the Father is God making us citizens of His Kingdom, members of His household. Think about it.
