Treasured Vignettes
". . .let us strip off anything that slows us down or holds us back, and especially those sins that wrap themselves so tightly around our feet and trip us up; and let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us." Hebrews 12:1 LB
Pride is every person's stumbling block. The serpent tempted and deceived Eve at her pride; Cain slew his brother, Able, because of his pride; and, the stories go on and on throughout mankind's history. Pride sets oneself up as his own god to the exclusion, party or wholly, of the One True God. Pride disdains and disobeys the word of God and the divine principles that govern creation. If I would need to point to something that is the power and authority of Sin in my life, it would be pride. Humility and submission to God along with obedience to Him is the spiritual act of reverence for God. When the apostle Paul talks about the struggle between flesh and spirit, he means the clash between pride and humility, pride and submission, pride and obedience. Pride sets us up for easy deception. Pride deceives us into believing we can earn godliness by works. Pride is what Jesus dealt sharply with in His disciples. They wanted greatness, Jesus said be a servant--serving only God and serving others as God's servants. The kind of pride I'm talking about is sin. It is the sin of "the pride of life" (1 John 2:16); having life and taking that life, that God-given life, and living it as I determine to live it, without God. Out of this sin all other evil and wickedness, iniquity and transgression flows. Who can rescue me from this sin? "Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7) Think about it.
