Treasured Vignettes
"Since we have such a huge crowd of people of faith watching us from the grandstands, let us strip off anything that slows us down or holds us back, and especially those sins that wrap themselves so tightly around our feet and trip us up; and, let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us" (Hebrews 12:1, LB).
In the Holy Scriptures the word "saint" is often used to describe one of God's people. Have you ever wondered how may "saints" have preceded us in death? How many live on the earth today? How many are waiting to receive us in heaven? Most are not notable except to the Lord and to their neighbors. In many places they are cursed at, persecuted and ridiculed. They love God with their whole heart and love their neighbors, doing good to all even those who would make themselves their enemies. These are my heroes though I've never heard most of their testimonies. They encourage me by their presence on the earth, though I may never meet them here. Their very presence in their families and neighborhoods brings an atmosphere for transformation from darkness to light, death to everlasting life. There is no halo around their heads to distinguish them from anyone around them, yet there is a peace, a graciousness and confidence that draws those in need to them. Their lives are much like the rest of mankind in this world, yet they are hopeful when the going gets rough; they are peaceful in the midst of great turmoil; they are helpful to those around them with what ever means they may have. They love and care so much about those who live around them that, even if it means the cost of their lives, they can't help but share the good news about Jesus Christ with them. The unsung heroes of the faith, think about them and thank God for them.
