What Are You Thinking
Treasured Vignettes

"Your souls are harmed by what you think and say"(Mark 7:15ff, LB)

"It is the thought life that pollutes"(Mark 7:20). How does one pollute his thought life? First, we contradict God (Acts 10:14,15). I had a young man confess that he sought God in prayer for direction on how to handle a situation with another person. God answered but the young man thought the answer couldn't be from God for it was not what he wanted to hear. Secondly, we can corrupt our thinking by doing what we believe is wrong (1 Corinthians 8:8-13). We can ignore sound doctrine, the faithful word of the teachings of Christ(2 Timothy 4:3,4). Fourthly, we can be critical and argumentative with the brethren (Romans 14:1-3)and let our criticism make us proud (Colossians 2:16-23). Criticism comes from people making their own laws and rules and expecting all others to blindly obey. Fifthly, we can contemplate rebellion, disobedience and mistrust of God (Romans 1:21).

What gives our thoughts life? First we have to give a thought our attention. Then, we cultivate that thought by stirring it up and repeatedly pondering it. Thirdly, we give that thought expression either by word or deed. Our will and our emotions has a lot to do with giving power or energy to our thought life. Our strength is tied to what we think. What we believe are thoughts that are strong enough to color and direct our souls. Our beliefs are thoughts that are observed, fulfilled or adhered to.

How can we keep our thoughts pure? "By reading Your(God's)word and following its rules . . .I have thought much about Your words and stored them in my heart so that they would hold me back from sin" (Psalm 119:9,11) Proverbs 23:7 says, "As a man thinks in his heart so is he." Jesus said, "And you must love Him (God)with all your heart and soul and mind and strength"(Mark 12:30). Your "mind" being your thought life. Think about it.
