"[Even] if it should be necessary for me to die with You, I(Peter)will not deny or disown You!" "But again he (Peter) denied it falsely and disowned Him . . ." (Mark 14:31; 15:70, (Peter) mine)
There was a time in the Apostle Peter's life that he had great self-confidence. He was a natural leader, a hard-working successful fisherman and men liked hanging out with him. He was one of the first to be called to be a disciple by Jesus. He became one of the intimate friends of Jesus. Pretty heady stuff for a self-confident man. Even after Jesus' resurrection, Peter's confidence was not totally in Jesus Christ as God's Son. When Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him, he only could assure Jesus of a friendship (one man with another)not the deep, committed, trusting love in Him as God Incarnate.
Consider the Scripture passages about Peter after Jesus' ascension (Acts and First and Second Peter). You will find Peter still needing to deny his self-confidence and put his confidence in the Lord alone. How patient was the Lord with Peter! God even used Peter's self-confidence and natural leadership ability to bear witness of Himself and His Gospel. The Lord tested and re-tested Peter's faith throughout Peter's lifetime, working into the heart of this man His divine character and virtue. Peter learned well about the graciousness of the Lord. Peter would grow in it until he could confidently testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Lord, the Savior of mankind, even though it would cost him his life.
Most, if not all, of us are self-confident enough in some area of our lives to keep ourselves from fully trusting the Lord. But, if you have decided to become a follower of Christ, do not worry about your lack of confidence in the Lord. He will patiently test your faith until your confidence is established in Him. That's when you will truly be able to say, "Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. To Him be all glory!" Think about it.
