Who am I? A question most of us have asked as blooming young adults and some of us when we have entered into a “life crisis.” Many of us, if not all, have had the question answered by other people--our parents, our peers, our enemies, even strangers. The confusion comes because our spirits know there is “truth” about who we are, but we have relied on people’s “opinions.” There are as many opinions as there are people who are more than ready to tell you who you are. Then, throw in your own belief about yourself, based on past events and experiences, and, one can become quite lost in the maze.

There is one, however, known as “the Great Shepherd,” who came to seek and save the lost. He is the Fountainhead of Truth, Who can reveal exactly who you are and free you from confusion, frustration, self-hatred, etc. Have you asked Him who you are? Think about it.

Have you ever felt “assailed” by circumstances in your life? Calamities and violence that are in the news, you can reason, “that’s not happening here.” But, what about when your spouse is laid off from work? And, in the same day, your child spikes a 104 degree fever, the refrigerator quits, you learn that your best friends are filing for divorce and your Dad is diagnosed with cancer. Yet—you remain unshaken. You have a confidence that some One, bigger and more capable, is in charge and overseeing each of these events. Your heart is “at rest” instead of thumping wildly. You sense yourself in a refuge and protected by a powerful ally, cared for and helped by a reliable friend. Who has such an affect on the human soul? The answer is, the “God of all hope.” He has given us, through Christ Jesus, all we need to see us through—confidence, rest, protection, provision, love, and, hope. Think about it.

When Jesus Christ was born, people were busy with the tasks that they had done every day for years. They were doing what they needed to do to appease their oppressors and rulers. They were marrying, dying and giving birth. Their thoughts were on tomorrow's work and events. Yet many, in the depths of their hearts were hoping for Messiah to come, just as God had promised. They expected one like David, the adored king of Israel. But, they seem to have forgotten that David was the least and last in his family. He was given the lowliest task of shepherding the family flocks. They seem to have forgotten that though he was annointed king of Israel, he was exiled and hunted by the reigning authorities of that day. All the people seemed to remember was David's fame after he became king. Jesus, the Eternal King, came the way God determined, from humble beginnings. And the first to hear the glad tidings were the shepherds, still considered the lowliest occupation. Many kings and queens brought tribute to David and Solomon for the building of the tabernacle in Jerusalem. A few magi brought tribute to Jesus, but He would build an eternal temple for God, made without human hands. There were those who would understand this and rejoice and believe. But, there were many who would not. Yes, David was a great and God-favored king, but he was a mere foreshadowing of the true King, the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The people were looking for a warrior king who would deliver them from their oppressors of the day, Rome. But, sin is the greatest oppressor at any time and Jesus came to deliver God's people from their bondage to this oppresor, for all time. The people expected a ruler for Israel, God sent the King of all creation. The people believed the blood of their enemies, flowing in the streets of Jerusalem, would free them from tyranny. But, God shed the blood of His only Son, Jesus Christ, to give all men everywhere victory and freedom. The people wanted an earthly government in the hands of a temporary king; but God would establish His heavenly kingdom governed by an Eternal King. The people of Jesus' time would have settled for a temporary fix to their dilemna, but God had other plans. Think about it.

It only took One anointed, appointed Man, Jesus Christ, to effect the completion of God’s plan of redemption and reconciliation for mankind. There is an old proverb:”One rotten apple can spoil the whole barrel.” This is true; however, we must also remember that it only takes one who chooses to act rightly to alter a course of events or an endangered relationship. Selah.

With the technology of today skilled technicians can create “virtual reality.” These technicians can doctor events photographically so that what is fantasy appears real and visa versa. This, in itself, is not evil; however, like anything man creates, it can be used for good or evil. If used for evil purposes, the undiscerning will be deceived and evil increased. It will take “divine insight” for an individual to be able to discern truth from deception and righteousness from wickedness. Insight comes by way of the Holy Spirit. He has been sent to “convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.” He has been given to Jesus’ disciples to “guide you into all truth” and” disclose to you what is to come.” Christians are given the Holy Spirit that we may learn righteousness and act righteously. When we act in righteousness, we will stand out like beacons in this dark world. Jesus commissioned us to “make disciples,” i.e., “to lead many to righteousness.” Jesus, through His word, exhorts us to “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” What’s your wattage, 30, 60, 100? Shine on! Selah.
